Cholla Wood

Cholla wood is the natural skeleton of a cholla cactus, left behind after the plant dies. Featuring a hollow center and a matrix of open holes, it provides an ideal natural sanctuary and hiding spot for freshwater shrimp and small fish.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal and shelter benefits, cholla wood naturally develops a layer of biofilm, serving as an essential, continuous food source for shrimp. As a natural botanical, it also gently leaches beneficial tannins into the water, which can help slightly lower and soften your aquarium's pH.

  • Size: Approximately 7–9 cm in length on average. Available in two thicknesses.

  • Origin: Sourced ethically from the deserts of New Mexico, USA.

  • Note: As a 100% natural product, variations in color, size, and texture will occur—every piece is completely unique! The product photos serve as a representative guide.

Preparation Instructions

Because dry cholla wood will initially float, you must boil the wood for at least one hour (sometimes slightly longer) to fully saturate it and ensure it sinks when placed in your aquarium.

Important Safety Information

All of our aquatic botanicals are intended for ornamental aquarium or terrarium use only and are not intended for human consumption (DO NOT INGEST).

Always take the time to boil or soak all botanicals prior to introduction to minimize any potential water chemistry spikes. While all our products are tried, tested, and safe, we recommend going slow when introducing any new botanicals to your system so you can monitor how they affect your fish, shrimp, and plants.
